Former Temiya Railway

The Temiya Line is part of the government-run Horonai Railway, which was originally built to transport coal. It is the oldest railway line in Hokkaido, having opened in 1880. It later became a passenger railway line, and was closed in 1985. Currently, part of the track has been preserved and has been turned into a walking path.

■Photo Spot

It’s a popular photo spot because you can take photos right on the tracks. You can enjoy cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn leaves in the fall.
Behind the Former Nippon Yusen Otaru Branch on the north side is a lesser known but highly recommended photo spot. While there is only one track on the south side, which is bustling with tourists, here there are two tracks running parallel to each other. It’s spacious and not very crowded, so you can enjoy a leisurely stroll.

■Activity

There is a 1,600m walking path along the railway line. You can enjoy a stroll while taking in the historical scenery of Otaru. You can also learn about the history of Hokkaido’s railways at the Otaru City Museum.

■Event

・Otaru Snow Light Path

This is a winter event held every February. At the Temiya Railway venue, snow objects and ice candles are lined up along the tracks, creating a truly fantastical sight.
